History of Aromatherapy Aromatherapy has been known and used by mankind for over 5,000 years. In the last few centuries it has brought renewed interest in the healing qualities of essential oils all over the world. The French chemist Dr. Rene-Maurice Gattefosse is considered the father of modern aromatherapy. He coined the term aromatherapy and wrote his first book in 1937. His findings were used in many medicinal applications for instance during World War II to disinfect and heal wounds. Today, over a thousand physicians in France use essential oils to help heal their patients.
How does Aromatherapy work? Odor stimuli (plant essential oils) in the limbic system or olfactory brain can facilitate the release of neuro transmitters that can reduce pain, produce pleasant euphoric sensations and create a feeling of well being. Different scent stimuli can affect different areas of the limbic brain. For example Lavender induces calmness while Peppermint increases mental alertness.
